This sculpture of a robed figure can be found in the old abbey cloister beside the Abbey ruins.
Many believe that it represented the monks of the abbey, but the truth is a bit more sinister and convoluted.
It is called The Executioner and is a replica of the main figure from a sculpture group at Dorchester representing the Dorset Martyrs.
In the original piece, the Executioner can be found with another two figures on Gallows Hill in Dorchester and commemorates Catholic martyrs who were killed there in the 16th and 17th centuries. It was unveiled in 1986.
The statue is by the British sculpturess Elisabeth Frink.
It isn't easy to find - walk past the Abbey Gate opposite Forbury Gardens and take the next right and you will find the statue on the little green to your left.
Does anyone know when and why this statue ended up in its present location ? If so, let us know and we will update this story !
